Why Financial Therapy
You can know exactly what you should do with money and still not do it. You might avoid your bank app for weeks, buy things you later regret, or lie awake running numbers after a divorce. That isn’t a character flaw or a lack of discipline.
Financial therapy looks at the whole picture: the emotions, family history, nervous system responses, and life circumstances behind your money decisions. We don’t just make a plan. We work on the reasons plans haven’t stuck before.
Financial therapy may be a fit if you’re…
Navigating divorce or separation. You’re managing money on your own for the first time, or rebuilding after a settlement, and you want to make decisions with a clear head instead of in survival mode.
Starting over after a major change. Widowhood, a job change or job loss, a move, or a caregiving shift has turned your finances upside down.
Launching a business alongside your day job. You’re dealing with income uncertainty, questions about your worth and pricing, and the fear that comes with betting on yourself.
Caught in an overspending cycle. You shop to soothe, celebrate, or escape, then feel regret and try to make up for it, and the cycle repeats. This is especially common for women with ADHD.
Carrying money anxiety or avoidance. You pay bills late even though you can afford them, feel dread around money conversations, or have trouble enjoying money even when things are fine.
What we explore together
- Your money story: what you learned about money growing up and how it shows up now
- Triggers and patterns: what’s happening emotionally and physically before a money decision
- ADHD and money: time blindness, impulsivity, avoidance, and systems that work with your brain
- Relationships and money: difficult conversations with partners, exes, family, or clients
- Practical structure: spending plans, bill systems, and decision tools you’ll actually use
What clients often notice
- Opening a bank app without a jolt of dread
- Fewer purchases they regret, and faster recovery when they happen
- Confidence making big decisions during a transition
- Money conversations that feel calmer and more honest
- A relationship with money based on their own values, not old rules
Financial therapy vs. financial planning
I’m a licensed therapist, not a financial planner. I don’t give investment, tax, or legal advice. What I do is help you understand and change the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that affect your finances. Many clients work with a financial planner or attorney alongside therapy, and I’m glad to coordinate with your team.
What sessions look like
- Free 15-minute consultation. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you in and whether financial therapy is the right fit.
- Intake session. We’ll map your financial picture, your goals, and the patterns you want to change. You share only what you’re comfortable sharing.
- Ongoing sessions. Weekly or biweekly, 50 minutes, in person or by telehealth.
Fee: $200 per session. Private pay; superbills are available for possible out-of-network reimbursement, and HSA/FSA cards are accepted.
FAQ
Do I have to share my account balances or income?
Only what you’re comfortable sharing, and only when it’s useful. Many sessions focus on patterns and emotions more than numbers.
I’m embarrassed about my finances. Is that okay?
Most clients feel some shame when they start. This is a judgment-free space, and working through that shame is often part of what we do.
I have ADHD, or I think I might. Is that a problem?
Not at all. It’s a specialty of mine. I’m an ADHD-Certified Clinical Services Provider, and we’ll build strategies that fit how your brain works.
Is this covered by insurance?
CCS is private pay, and financial therapy generally isn’t billed to insurance. I can provide superbills for any mental health services that may qualify for out-of-network reimbursement under your plan.
